Vietnam Waste Solutions Company (VSW) is seeking HCMC approval for developing a golf project on Dong Thanh Dumpsite in the city's outlying district of Hoc Mon.

Huynh Lan Phuong, vice director of VWS, said the company had submitted to the city government the project to build Saigon Village Country Club with an 18-hole golf course on the 115-hectare dumpsite.
"If the project is approved, we will improve the environment in the area by using modern facilities imported from the U.S. to develop the golf course. Construction work will take around 18months," Phuong told the Daily yesterday.
Dong Thanh Dumpsite was closed several years ago but still has some two million tons of waste. There, a South Korean company is developing a clean development mechanism (CDM) project to treat all the gases from the waste in 2008-2014.
Phuong said the golf project would not affect the present CDM project because the company would use all light materials to build facilities on the hilly dumpsite.
The company will have a meeting with the city's Department of Natural Resources and Environment late this month to discuss technical details about the project, she said. VWS is now the operator of Da Phuoc landfill in Binh Chanh District with a daily handling capacity of some 3,000 tons.
In a related development, the city's government has given the green light to VWS to make a pre-feasibility study for a waste treatment complex in Thu Thua District of Long An Province.
The complex, which covers some 1,760 hectares and has a licensed period of over 75 years, will have a treatment capacity of some 10,000 tons of waste per day for both HCMC and Long An Province.
Phuong said there would be a 440-hectare industrial park to be constructed in the complex with four sections, including a landfill, landfill gas to energy, food waste to compost and water treatment.
However, she declined to reveal the amount of investment capital for the complex.
